What Are Hedging Whips?

Applications and Uses
Wildlife Hedgerows
Bare root whips are ideal for creating wildlife-rich hedgerows that provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for birds, insects, and small mammals. Native species support local ecosystems and biodiversity.
Boundary Hedging
Establish natural, living boundaries that define property lines, provide privacy, and create attractive garden divisions. Whips grow into dense, effective barriers over time.
Agricultural and Rural Projects
Perfect for farm hedgerows, field boundaries, and rural land management schemes. Create windbreaks, prevent soil erosion, and provide shelter for livestock.
Planting and Care Guide
When to Plant
The ideal planting season for bare root hedging whips is from November to March, when plants are dormant. This timing allows roots to establish before spring growth begins.
Planting Instructions
- Prepare the ground by removing weeds and improving soil with organic matter
- Dig a trench approximately 30cm wide and deep
- Space whips 30-40cm apart for a dense hedge (3-4 plants per metre)
- Plant at the same depth as they were growing in the field
- Firm in well and water thoroughly after planting
- Apply mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture
- Protect from rabbits and livestock with guards or fencing
First Year Care
- Water during dry spells to help establishment
- Keep the base weed-free for at least 1 metre either side
- Trim back by one-third after planting to encourage bushy growth
- Check and adjust tree guards or protection as needed
Long-Term Maintenance
- Trim annually in late winter to maintain shape and density
- Continue weed control for the first 2-3 years
- Apply mulch annually to retain moisture
- Allow hedges to mature before heavy cutting
