Beech Bare Root Hedging
Fagus sylvatica is a classic British hedging plant prized for its elegant form, rich seasonal colour, and distinctive winter foliage retention. Available as bare root hedging in bundles of 25 plants, 40-60cm tall. Available from the middle of November to April during the optimal bare root planting season.

Beech creates a handsome formal hedge noted for its rich yellow or orange autumn colour. Although not evergreen, beech retains its old brown leaves in winter, providing additional interest and screening throughout the year. In autumn, beech nuts (sometimes referred to as 'mast') are produced, which can attract squirrels and add seasonal interest. The dense foliage provides excellent shelter from wind and weather, offering a safe haven for birds and small mammals.

Planting Instructions
Plant bare root Beech between November and April when dormant. Beech prefers well-drained soils and will not tolerate waterlogging — avoid heavy clay or boggy ground. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and is excellent on chalk and sandy soils.
Space 3–5 plants per metre for a dense hedge. Soak roots for 1–2 hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread roots without bending, plant to the nursery mark depth, firm in and water well.
Water during dry spells in the first season. Trim once a year in late summer to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Beech responds well to formative pruning in the early years to build a strong framework.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes
Beech supports a rich variety of wildlife. The canopy provides nesting sites for many bird species including Chaffinches and Bramblings. Beech mast (nuts) in autumn is a critical food source for Woodpigeons, Jays, Squirrels, and Dormice. The dense hedge provides excellent shelter for small mammals and overwintering insects. Beech supports numerous moth species and the retained dead leaves through winter provide additional habitat for invertebrates.
