Planting Instructions
Plant bare root Hornbeam between November and April when dormant. Hornbeam thrives in most soils including heavy clay, in full sun or partial shade. It is one of the best hedging plants for shaded or exposed sites.
Space 3–5 plants per metre for a dense hedge. Soak roots for 1–2 hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread roots without bending, plant to the nursery mark depth, firm in and water well.
Water during dry spells in the first season. Trim once a year in late summer to maintain shape. Hornbeam retains its dead leaves through winter, providing year-round privacy and shelter.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes
Hornbeam supports a wide range of wildlife. Its catkins provide early pollen for bees in spring. The seeds are eaten by Hawfinches, Greenfinches, and small mammals. Dense hedging provides excellent nesting cover for birds. As a native species, it supports numerous moth and insect species. The retained dead leaves through winter provide additional shelter for insects and small mammals.
