Planting Instructions

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Tolerates full sun to partial shade — some afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter positions to prevent leaf scorch. Shelter from strong winds and late frosts, which can damage the emerging spring foliage.

Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry periods. Mulch annually with leaf mould or bark to retain moisture and maintain soil acidity. Minimal pruning is required — remove any dead or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when fully dormant.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Acer palmatum provides valuable seasonal habitat for garden wildlife. Its canopy offers nesting and roosting cover for birds, while the flowers provide an early nectar source for bees and other pollinators in spring.

The autumn seed keys (samaras) are a food source for birds and small mammals. As a long-lived specimen tree, it contributes lasting structural and ecological value to the garden over many decades.
