Acer Palmatum 'Firecracker' - Japanese Maple

A spectacular slow-growing Japanese maple renowned for its intensely coloured, deeply dissected foliage. Firecracker features stunning feathery leaves in a rich deep red-purple that create a dramatic focal point throughout the growing season, before transforming into vivid orange and red flames of colour in autumn.

Key Features

  • Deep red-purple feathery, dissected foliage
  • Spectacular vivid orange-red autumn colour
  • Slow-growing habit - ideal for small gardens
  • Compact size: 2-4m height and spread
  • Perfect for containers, borders, or as a specimen tree
  • Hardy and low maintenance

Planting & Care

Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Prefers a sheltered spot with partial to full sun, though some shade protection helps prevent leaf scorch in hot summers. Protect from strong winds and late frosts for best foliage quality.

An exceptional choice for adding year-round drama and colour to Japanese-style gardens, contemporary landscapes, or mixed borders. Its compact, slow-growing nature makes it particularly suitable for smaller gardens, courtyard spaces, and large patio containers.

Planting Instructions

Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Choose a sheltered spot with partial to full sun — some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch in hot summers. Protect from strong winds and late frosts. Water regularly during the first growing season. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Minimal pruning required — remove dead or damaged branches in late summer only.

Size & Specification

Slow-growing deciduous Japanese maple reaching 2–4 metres in height and spread at maturity. Supplied in a 7.5 litre or 15/20 litre pot. Slow-growing habit. Fully hardy (H5).

Delivery & Dispatch

Dispatched via pallet or courier depending on size. Delivery available across mainland UK. Plants are carefully packaged to ensure they arrive in excellent condition. Please allow 3–7 working days for delivery.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

The small spring flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Winged seeds (samaras) are taken by birds and small mammals in autumn. Dense branching provides shelter for small garden birds and invertebrates throughout the year.
