Acer palmatum 'Jerre Schwartz' - Japanese Maple

A beautiful compact Japanese maple with a distinctive narrow, upright growth habit. Jerre Schwartz is prized for its delicate, finely dissected foliage that emerges in stunning bronze-pink tones in spring, maturing to green with bronze undertones through summer, before transforming into brilliant deep red and crimson shades in autumn.

Key Features

  • Narrow, upright columnar form - perfect for small spaces
  • Feathery, dissected foliage with bronze-pink spring colour
  • Brilliant deep red and crimson autumn display
  • Compact size: 1.5-3m height, 0.5-1m spread
  • Ideal for containers, narrow borders, or as a vertical accent
  • Hardy and low maintenance

Planting & Care

Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Prefers a sheltered position with partial shade to protect the delicate foliage from scorching, though tolerates more sun in cooler climates. Shelter from strong winds and late frosts for best results.

An exceptional choice for adding vertical interest and seasonal colour to Japanese-style gardens, contemporary landscapes, or mixed borders. Its narrow, upright habit makes it particularly suitable for smaller gardens, tight spaces, and patio containers where space is at a premium.

Planting Instructions

Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Choose a sheltered position with partial shade to protect the delicate foliage from scorching, though it tolerates more sun in cooler climates. Shelter from strong winds and late frosts. Water regularly during the first growing season. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Minimal pruning required — remove dead or damaged branches in late summer only.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

The small spring flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Winged seeds (samaras) are taken by birds and small mammals in autumn. Dense branching provides shelter for small garden birds and invertebrates throughout the year.
