Planting Instructions

Plant in a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade. Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' performs best in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Avoid exposed, windy sites and waterlogged conditions.

Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and to the same depth. Position so the root collar sits at ground level. Backfill with a mix of excavated soil and organic matter, firm gently, and water thoroughly.

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons. Apply a mulch of bark or leaf mould around the base to retain moisture and protect roots from frost. Avoid planting in frost pockets.

Pruning is rarely needed. If required, remove dead or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when fully dormant.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Acer palmatum cultivars provide modest but valuable wildlife benefits. Small spring flowers offer nectar for early pollinators including bees and hoverflies, while the winged seeds are occasionally taken by birds and small mammals.

The dense layered canopy provides shelter and nesting opportunities for small birds, contributing to broader garden biodiversity.
