Planting Instructions

Plant in spring to autumn in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Full sun produces the most vivid golden cane colour; partial shade is tolerated. Dig a generous hole, backfill firmly, and water thoroughly. Mulch generously around the base to retain moisture.

Important: Phyllostachys aurea is a running bamboo. Install a root barrier (at least 60cm deep) if planting in a contained space, or allow natural spreading in larger gardens. Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Thin old canes annually in spring to showcase golden stems and encourage vigorous new growth.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Phyllostachys aurea provides dense, year-round evergreen cover valued by garden birds for shelter and nesting. The tall canes and foliage create excellent microhabitat structure in urban and suburban gardens. Bamboo foliage supports a range of invertebrates. Note: as a running bamboo, root barrier management is recommended to prevent spread into adjacent habitats or neighbouring land.
