Planting Instructions
Plant Fargesia bamboo (Chinese fountain bamboo) in spring or autumn in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. It tolerates light shade well, making it one of the best bamboos for shadier corners, though a very exposed, windswept spot is best avoided.
Dig a planting hole twice the width of the pot and to the same depth as the root ball. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill, and firm in gently. Water thoroughly after planting and keep it well watered through the first growing season, as bamboo resents drying out while establishing.
Apply a thick mulch of well-rotted organic matter annually in spring to retain moisture and feed the roots. Because Fargesia is clump-forming with no underground runners, no root barrier is needed and it can safely be planted near borders, lawns, and patios, or grown in large containers.
Maintenance is minimal: remove old or weak canes at the base in spring to keep the clump fresh and vigorous, and thin congested growth occasionally. No regular clipping is required.
