Planting Instructions
Plant in spring or autumn in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Berberis thunbergii tolerates most soil types including clay, chalk, and sandy soils. Space plants 25–30cm apart (3–4 per metre) for a dense security hedge.
Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and to the same depth as the pot. Remove the plant, gently tease out any circling roots, and position so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil. Backfill, firm well, and water thoroughly.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish. Apply a 5–7cm mulch of bark or compost around the base (keeping it clear of the stem) to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Wear thick gloves when handling — the thorns are sharp. Trim after flowering in late spring or early summer to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.
