White Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis 'Doorenbos') Standard Tree

Create a striking focal point with the luminous bark and graceful crown of White Himalayan Birch. Betula utilis 'Doorenbos' is prized for its white, peeling bark, bringing contrast to green planting and a strong architectural presence when the branches are bare in winter.

Supplied approximately 3–3.5 m tall as a standard tree with a rootball, this birch adds height and structure to garden and landscape schemes. Position it where the trunk can be enjoyed throughout the year, against evergreens or beside a view from the house.

Why choose 'Doorenbos'?

  • Distinctive white bark provides year-round interest as the tree develops.
  • A graceful, shapely crown brings an airy quality to planting.
  • Green deciduous foliage turns yellow in autumn.
  • The pale trunk stands out particularly well against darker foliage.
  • Standard form creates a clear structural focal point.

Supplied size and form

Supplied as a standard rootballed tree approximately 3–3.5 m tall. This is the supplied height, not the eventual mature size. Branching, crown shape and bark development vary naturally between individual trees. Although elegant in appearance, this is not a dwarf birch, so allow room for future growth.

Position and growing conditions

Choose full sun or partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. Avoid ground that remains waterlogged or becomes persistently dry. Give the tree sufficient space to develop its crown and roots, with a position that shows off the pale trunk.

Planting and aftercare

Keep the rootball moist and protected before planting. Prepare a wide planting hole and set the tree with its root flare at soil level. Backfill carefully, water thoroughly and stake where needed to stabilise the rootball. Apply mulch clear of the trunk and water during dry spells while establishing. Check tree ties regularly as the trunk grows.

Planting Instructions

Plant White Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis 'Doorenbos') in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Allow space for its mature crown and roots. Plant rootballed stock during dormancy when the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged, keeping the rootball moist and protected until planting.

Prepare a hole wider than the rootball and set the root flare at soil level. Support the rootball when moving the tree rather than lifting by the trunk. Remove synthetic wrapping and follow nursery guidance for hessian or wire supports without breaking up the rootball. Backfill carefully, water thoroughly and stake where needed to prevent rootball movement. Mulch clear of the trunk, check ties regularly and water deeply during dry spells while establishing.

Size & Specification

Supplied as a standard White Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis 'Doorenbos'), approximately 3–3.5 m tall, with a rootball. This is the supplied height, not the eventual mature size; this is not a dwarf tree.

Crown shape, branching and the development of white bark vary naturally between trees. Stem girth, clear-stem height and rootball dimensions are not specified. Contact the nursery if these measurements are important to your planting scheme.

Delivery & Dispatch

This approximately 3–3.5 m standard birch is supplied with a rootball. Please confirm dispatch timing, delivery access and unloading arrangements with Stoneybrook Nursery before ordering. Rootball lifting and dispatch can be affected by weather and ground conditions.

Prepare the planting area before arrival where possible. Keep the rootball moist and protected from frost and drying winds, and plant promptly when conditions are suitable. Use appropriate handling equipment and support the rootball rather than lifting the tree by its trunk.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

The developing canopy of White Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis 'Doorenbos') offers shelter and perching places for birds. Birch foliage can support insects, while fallen leaves can be composted or used to make leaf mould.

Himalayan birch is not native to the UK. Combine it with native trees, shrubs and flowering plants to broaden the range of habitats and food sources in the garden.
