Ceanothus 'Victoria' – Deep Blue California Lilac

Ceanothus 'Victoria' is widely regarded as one of the finest of all the California lilacs — and it is easy to see why. In late spring, its dense, upright form is smothered in rich, deep blue flower clusters that create a truly spectacular display against the glossy, dark green evergreen foliage. Fast-growing and long-flowering, it is an outstanding choice for a sunny wall or fence, as a freestanding specimen in a sheltered border, or as an informal screen. Few shrubs deliver such intense colour with so little effort.

Why Choose 'Victoria'

  • Exceptionally rich, deep blue flowers — one of the most intensely coloured Ceanothus varieties
  • Long flowering season from May through to June, with occasional repeat flushes
  • Dense, upright evergreen habit — excellent for wall training and informal screening
  • Glossy dark green foliage provides year-round structure and contrast
  • Fast-growing — establishes quickly and makes an impact in its first season
  • Highly attractive to bees and pollinators throughout the flowering period

Growing Guide

  • Position: Full sun; ideally against a south- or west-facing wall for shelter and warmth
  • Soil: Well-drained to dry; tolerates poor, sandy, and chalky soils
  • Hardiness: Hardy in most of the UK (RHS H4); wall training improves hardiness in colder areas
  • Ultimate height: 3–4m if wall-trained; 1.5–2m as a freestanding shrub
  • Pruning: Lightly trim after flowering; avoid cutting into old wood as it does not regenerate well

Planting Instructions

Planting Instructions

Ceanothus 'Victoria' thrives in a warm, sunny position with excellent drainage. Plant in spring or early summer for best establishment, avoiding cold, wet periods.

  • Plant against a warm, sheltered south- or west-facing wall for best performance and winter protection
  • Ensure excellent drainage — Ceanothus will not tolerate waterlogged soils
  • No feeding required — lean soils encourage better flowering and hardiness
  • Dig a planting pit twice the width of the pot and the same depth; backfill without added fertiliser
  • Water in well after planting; thereafter water sparingly — drought tolerance improves with age
  • Tie in new growth when wall-training to build a strong framework
  • Lightly trim after flowering; avoid cutting into old wood as it does not regenerate well
