- Choose a sunny, sheltered position — south- or west-facing is ideal, protected from cold winds
- Excellent drainage is essential — plant in a raised bed or add grit if soil is heavy
- Dig a planting pit twice the width of the root ball and the same depth
- Backfill with well-drained compost or a 50/50 mix of topsoil and grit
- Water regularly during the first growing season; reduce watering in autumn and winter
- Mulch around the base with gravel to keep the crown dry and retain warmth
- In colder regions, wrap the crown loosely with fleece during prolonged hard frosts
- Remove old or damaged fronds at the base as needed to maintain a tidy appearance
