Planting & Care
Plant 3-5 per metre for hedging. Thrives in moist soils and full sun to partial shade. Planting Instructions
Plant bare root Cornus sanguinea between November and April when dormant. Common Dogwood is very adaptable and thrives in most soils including chalk and clay, in full sun or partial shade. It is particularly good on alkaline soils.
Space 3–5 plants per metre for a dense hedge. Soak roots for 1–2 hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread roots without bending, plant to the nursery mark depth, firm in and water well.
Water during dry spells in the first season. Cut back hard every 2–3 years in early spring to encourage the best stem colour and vigorous new growth. This also keeps the plant bushy and dense.

Common Dogwood is an excellent native shrub for wildlife. Its creamy white flowers in June provide nectar and pollen for bees and hoverflies. The dark purple berries in autumn are eaten by many bird species including Robins, Blackbirds, and Warblers. Dense growth provides nesting cover for birds. As a native species it supports numerous moth and insect species. The striking red stems in winter add structure and colour to the garden.
