Planting & Care
Plant Leylandii in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, spacing 60–90cm apart for hedging. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a strong root system. Feed annually in spring with a balanced fertiliser to maintain vigorous growth. Trim twice yearly (late spring and late summer) to maintain shape and density. Avoid cutting into old wood as Leylandii does not regenerate from bare stems.

Cupressocyparis leylandii is one of the easiest conifers to establish. Plant at any time of year, though spring and autumn are ideal. Space plants 60–90cm apart for a dense hedge.
- Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil — avoid waterlogged or very dry ground
- Space 60–90cm apart for a dense privacy hedge; 90–120cm for a looser shelter belt
- Dig individual holes or a trench twice the width and depth of the root balls
- Backfill with topsoil and firm in well; water thoroughly after planting
- Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a strong root system
- Feed annually in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support vigorous growth
- Trim twice yearly — late spring and late summer — to maintain shape and density
- Never cut into old, bare wood — Leylandii will not regenerate from leafless stems

Leylandii has a limited wildlife value compared to native hedging species, but it does provide some useful habitat functions, particularly for birds seeking dense nesting cover.
