Planting Instructions
Plant in any well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Elaeagnus x ebbingei is one of the most tolerant and adaptable screening shrubs available — it thrives in coastal and exposed positions and is highly wind and salt-spray resistant.
Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball. Position the espalier frame against a wall, fence, or in an open position for a freestanding screen. Backfill with the excavated soil, firm in well, and water thoroughly. Stake the frame securely if needed in exposed sites. Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it requires minimal irrigation. Trim lightly in late spring after flowering to maintain the espalier shape.
Size & Specification
Supplied trained on a professional metal espalier frame, 150cm tall x 100cm wide. The plant is established and ready to provide immediate screening on delivery. Frame is included and integral to the plant structure.
Elaeagnus x ebbingei is a vigorous evergreen shrub that, when free-growing, can reach 3–4m. Trained as an espalier it is maintained at the frame dimensions with annual light trimming.
Delivery & Dispatch
Supplied as a pre-order item. Espalier frames of this size are dispatched on a pallet to mainland UK addresses. Please ensure suitable access for pallet delivery at your property.
We will contact you to arrange a suitable delivery date. Please plant or position the espalier promptly on arrival and water thoroughly. Avoid leaving the plant unplanted for extended periods after delivery.
Wildlife & Ecological Notes
Elaeagnus x ebbingei produces small but intensely fragrant silvery-white flowers in October and November — a time when very few other shrubs are in bloom. These flowers are highly attractive to late-season pollinators including ivy bees, hoverflies, and any remaining bumblebee queens seeking nectar before winter.
The dense evergreen foliage also provides excellent year-round shelter and nesting cover for garden birds, and the small orange-red berries produced in spring are eaten by thrushes and other fruit-feeding species.
