Euonymus alatus (Burning Bush / Winged Spindle)

Euonymus alatus, widely known as the burning bush, is a tough, slow-growing deciduous shrub that keeps a low profile through summer and then steals the show in autumn, when its small, oval leaves turn one of the most intense scarlet-crimson displays of any hardy garden shrub. Planted against a backdrop of evergreens or a dark fence, the autumn colour is genuinely show-stopping.

Its other signature feature is the unusual corky, winged ridges that run along its stems, giving the bare winter silhouette real character and its alternative common name, the winged spindle. In late spring, modest green flowers are followed in some years by small crimson-red fruits that birds appreciate.

Growing Conditions

Avoid permanently wet ground. Height and spread reach roughly 2–2.5 metres over time, but its slow growth makes it easy to keep smaller, and it needs no regular pruning beyond removing any misplaced stems in late winter.

Euonymus alatus is fully hardy in the UK and largely trouble-free. Like all Euonymus it dislikes waterlogged soil, and autumn colour is at its fiercest when the summer has been sunny and the soil is on the dry side.
