Euonymus alatus 'Compactus' – Spectacular Autumn Colour in a Compact Form

If you're looking for a shrub that earns its place with a single, breathtaking season, Euonymus alatus 'Compactus' delivers it every autumn. The foliage transforms into an intense blaze of crimson and scarlet — one of the most vivid autumn displays of any hardy shrub available in the UK.

More restrained than the species, 'Compactus' forms a neat, rounded habit that fits naturally into mixed borders, formal schemes, or as a standalone specimen. Outside of autumn, it offers clean, dark green foliage and an architectural, layered branch structure that adds quiet interest year-round.

Key Features

  • Exceptional crimson-scarlet autumn foliage — one of the finest of any hardy shrub
  • Compact, rounded habit — more manageable than the full-size species
  • Distinctive corky, winged stems add winter structure and interest
  • Fully hardy across the UK (RHS H6)
  • Tolerates a wide range of soils and aspects
  • Low maintenance once established

Growing Guide

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade; best autumn colour in full sun
  • Soil: Any well-drained soil; tolerates dry conditions once established
  • Mature size: Approx. 1.5m × 1.5m over 10 years
  • Supplied as: Established 10–12 litre pot-grown plant, ready to plant out

An outstanding choice for adding a reliable, low-effort focal point to autumn planting schemes. Pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, Acer palmatum, and late-flowering perennials.

Planting Instructions

Plant Euonymus alatus 'Compactus' (compact winged spindle / burning bush) between autumn and early spring, avoiding frozen or waterlogged ground. It grows in any well-drained soil, including dry and chalky sites, and is best positioned in full sun or light shade — full sun gives the fiercest autumn colour.

Dig a planting hole twice the width of the pot and to the same depth as the root ball. Tease out any circling roots, set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill with garden soil, and firm in gently.

Water thoroughly after planting and keep the root ball moist through the first growing season. Apply a mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base each spring, keeping it clear of the stems. Once established it is very drought tolerant and needs little feeding.

Pruning is minimal: remove any misplaced or crossing stems in late winter. Its slow, naturally compact growth means no regular clipping is required, making it an easy, low-maintenance specimen.

Size & Specification

Supplied as an established, pot-grown plant in a 10–12 litre pot, ready to plant straight out into the garden.

'Compactus' is the more restrained form of Euonymus alatus, forming a neat, rounded, densely branched shrub. Expect roughly 1.5 metres in height and spread over ten years, growing slowly and remaining easy to keep smaller if space is limited. Fully hardy throughout the UK.

Delivery & Dispatch

Supplied in its 10–12 litre pot, carefully secured and packaged by hand so it arrives in excellent condition, ready to plant. Orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days of receipt, and you will receive a notification once your order is on its way.

Delivery to the Scottish Highlands, islands, and other remote postcodes may take slightly longer — please contact us before ordering if you are unsure. If your plant arrives damaged or in poor condition, please contact us within 48 hours with photographs and we will put it right.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

In late spring, small green flowers are followed in some years by crimson-red fruits that provide food for foraging birds. The flowers are modest, but they are still visited by pollinating insects early in the season.

The dense, layered branch structure offers shelter and nesting cover for garden birds, and as a tough, pollution-tolerant shrub it brings reliable structure and seasonal food value to town gardens and mixed wildlife borders alike.
