Planting Instructions
Plant Euonymus japonicus 'Aureomarginatus' (golden evergreen euonymus) between autumn and early spring, avoiding frozen or waterlogged ground. It performs best in full sun to partial shade, where the golden variegation is most pronounced, and adapts to most well-drained soils including coastal and urban sites.
As this is a half standard, drive a sturdy stake into the planting hole before planting, keeping it clear of the root ball. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill with garden soil, and firm in gently. Tie the stem to the stake with an adjustable tree tie and check it each season.
For hedging, space plants 45–60cm apart for a dense formal hedge. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the roots moist through the first growing season. Apply a mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base each spring, keeping it clear of the stems.
It responds beautifully to clipping: trim once or twice a year from late spring onwards to maintain a crisp formal shape or topiary head. Once established it is drought tolerant and needs little feeding.

As a hedge it is easily maintained anywhere between 1 and 2.5 metres with clipping; left unclipped it will eventually reach around 2.5–3 metres. The variegated foliage holds its colour year-round, keeping its structure through winter. Fully hardy throughout the UK.
