Growing Guide

Planting Instructions
Plant pleached Fagus sylvatica (common beech) from late autumn to early spring, avoiding frozen or waterlogged ground. Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil; beech dislikes sitting in permanently wet ground.
Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and to the same depth. Because a pleached tree catches the wind, drive a sturdy stake (or twin stakes and cross rails for larger frames) into the hole before planting, keeping it clear of the root ball. Set the tree so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill, firm gently, and tie the stem to the stake with adjustable tree ties.
Water thoroughly and keep the root ball moist through the first two growing seasons, as establishment is the key period for pleached trees. Apply a thick mulch around the base each spring, keeping it clear of the stem, and feed generously at the planting stage to encourage strong root development.
Trim once or twice a year, ideally in late summer, to keep the flat pleached frame crisp. New growth can be clipped back to the framework; avoid cutting into old wood beyond the panel shape.

The precise dimensions of the clear stem and canopy panel vary from batch to batch — please contact us for the measurements of current stock before ordering.
Once planted, the canopy is maintained at its trained size with an annual or twice-yearly clip. Beech is fully hardy throughout the UK and tolerates most well-drained soils. Because of their size and weight, pleached trees of this grade are delivered kerbside on a specialist service rather than by parcel courier.

Common beech is a native British tree and one of the most valuable for wildlife, supporting a wide range of moth and butterfly caterpillars whose larvae feed on its leaves, along with birds and small mammals that use the canopy for shelter and nesting.
A particular quirk of beech is marcescence: the copper-brown dead leaves are held on the branches through winter before falling in spring. On a pleached beech this not only maintains privacy through the coldest months but also gives birds extra concealed roosting cover at the time of year they need it most.
