Growing Notes
Plant in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Thrives in most conditions but flowers best with good light. Planting Instructions
Plant Forsythia x intermedia between autumn and early spring, avoiding frozen or waterlogged ground. It grows in almost any well-drained soil and is happiest in full sun or partial shade; more light means a better spring display.
Dig a planting hole twice the width of the pot and to the same depth as the root ball. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil, backfill with garden soil, and firm in gently. Water thoroughly after planting and keep it moist through the first growing season.
For an informal hedge, space plants 60–90cm apart. Apply a mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base each spring, keeping it clear of the stems.
Prune immediately after flowering has finished, cutting back flowered stems to strong new growth: this keeps the shrub shapely and ensures next spring's display, as forsythia flowers on stems made the previous year. Hardy and low maintenance once established.

Its mass of golden-yellow flowers opening on bare stems in March and April provides a valuable early source of nectar and pollen for newly emerged bumblebees and other early pollinators, at a time when little else in the garden is in bloom.
