Golden Chain Tree (Laburnum × watereri 'Vossii') – 1.75–2 m Rootball

Bring a cascade of golden-yellow flowers to your garden with the Golden Chain Tree. Laburnum × watereri 'Vossii' is prized for its long, hanging flower clusters in late spring and early summer, creating a striking display above fresh green foliage.

Supplied approximately 1.75–2 m tall as a maiden tree with a rootball, this young specimen offers the opportunity to develop its framework as it grows. Position it where the hanging flowers can be enjoyed against a leafy backdrop or as a seasonal focal point.

Why choose 'Vossii'?

  • Long, pendulous clusters of golden-yellow flowers.
  • A distinctive late-spring to early-summer display.
  • Green deciduous foliage with seasonal autumn colour.
  • Typically produces fewer seeds than many other laburnums, but is not seed-free.
  • Young maiden form for establishing and developing in the garden.

Supplied size and form

Supplied approximately 1.75–2 m tall as a maiden tree with a rootball. This is the supplied height, not its eventual mature size. Branching and appearance vary naturally, and a maiden tree should not be expected to have the developed crown of a mature standard.

Position and growing conditions

Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil and enough room for the tree's crown and roots to develop. Avoid persistently waterlogged ground. Water regularly during dry spells while the tree establishes and keep the base free of competing weeds.

Important planting consideration

All parts of laburnum are poisonous if eaten, particularly the seeds. Reduced seed production does not make 'Vossii' safe to eat. Choose its position carefully where children or pets may have access, and wear gloves when handling or pruning.

Planting Instructions

Plant Golden Chain Tree (Laburnum × watereri 'Vossii') in a sunny position with well-drained soil and room for its mature crown and roots. Plant rootballed stock during dormancy when the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged. Keep the rootball moist and protected before planting.

Prepare a hole wider than the rootball and set the root flare at soil level. Support the rootball rather than lifting by the trunk. Remove synthetic wrapping and follow nursery guidance for hessian or wire supports without breaking up the rootball. Backfill, water thoroughly and stake where needed. Mulch clear of the trunk, check ties regularly and water in dry spells during establishment. All parts are poisonous if eaten; wear gloves when handling and keep plant material away from children and pets.

Size & Specification

Supplied as a maiden Golden Chain Tree (Laburnum × watereri 'Vossii'), approximately 1.75–2 m tall, with a rootball. This is the supplied height, not the eventual mature size. Maiden trees have a young framework rather than the developed crown of a mature standard.

Branching and appearance vary naturally. Stem girth and rootball dimensions are not specified. 'Vossii' typically produces fewer seeds than many laburnums, but is not seed-free; all parts remain poisonous if eaten.

Delivery & Dispatch

Supplied approximately 1.75–2 m tall as a maiden tree with a rootball. Please confirm dispatch timing, delivery access and unloading arrangements with Stoneybrook Nursery before ordering. Rootball lifting and dispatch can be affected by weather and ground conditions.

Keep the rootball moist and protected from frost and drying winds on arrival, and plant promptly when conditions are suitable. Support the rootball during handling. Wear gloves and keep the tree and any loose plant material away from children and pets, as all parts are poisonous if eaten.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

The yellow flowers of Golden Chain Tree (Laburnum × watereri 'Vossii') are visited by bees. As the tree develops, its branches provide perching places and cover for birds.

This cultivated hybrid is not a UK-native tree. Include native shrubs and other flowering plants nearby to broaden seasonal wildlife resources. All parts are poisonous if eaten, particularly the seeds; do not use prunings as animal feed.
