Growing & Care Guide

Planting: Cherry Laurel is incredibly adaptable and thrives in virtually any soil type and light condition, from full sun to deep shade. Plant 33cm apart (3 per metre) for hedging. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and incorporate organic matter for best results.

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, Cherry Laurel is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering.

Pruning: Trim once or twice a year (late spring and late summer) to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Use secateurs rather than hedge trimmers to avoid cutting through leaves, which can turn brown.

Feeding: Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring to promote vigorous growth and glossy foliage.

Top Tips for Success

  • Cherry Laurel is one of the best hedging plants for shady areas
  • Tolerates urban pollution and coastal conditions
  • Can be renovated by hard pruning if needed
  • Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds
