Planting Instructions
Plant in a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade, in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Magnolias prefer slightly acidic conditions — incorporate ericaceous compost or well-rotted organic matter at planting. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, position so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, backfill and firm in well. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect roots from frost. Avoid planting in frost pockets as early blooms can be damaged by late frosts. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to aid establishment. Pruning is rarely needed — remove only dead or crossing branches immediately after flowering.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes
Magnolia soulangeana provides early season nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators when few other trees are in bloom. The flowers are particularly valuable to bumblebees emerging in early spring. The dense canopy and branching structure offer nesting and roosting opportunities for birds. As a specimen tree, it contributes to garden biodiversity and provides seasonal structure for overwintering invertebrates.
