Planting Instructions

Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid exposed, frost-prone positions as late frosts can damage the blooms — a sheltered spot against a south- or west-facing wall is ideal. Mulch generously around the base to retain moisture and protect the roots.

Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry periods. Feed in spring with an ericaceous or balanced fertiliser. Minimal pruning is required — simply remove any dead or damaged wood immediately after flowering. Avoid hard pruning, which can reduce flowering the following year.

Size & Specification

Available in two sizes: 15-litre pot (young specimen, approx. 60–80cm) and 45-litre pot at 1–1.25m tall (established specimen ready for immediate impact). Both supplied as healthy, container-grown plants.

Eventual height: 3–4m with a similar spread. Compact, multi-stemmed habit. Slow to moderate growth rate. Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H6). Later-flowering than many magnolias, reducing frost damage risk.

Delivery & Dispatch

Dispatched in its nursery pot to protect the root system during transit. Carefully packaged to ensure safe arrival. We dispatch Monday to Wednesday to avoid weekend delays in transit.

Delivered via a specialist plant courier. You will receive a dispatch notification with tracking details. Please ensure someone is available to receive the delivery, as plants should not be left in packaging for extended periods. Larger specimens (45L) may require pallet delivery — we will confirm at the time of dispatch.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Magnolia soulangeana 'Susan' is a valuable early-season pollinator plant. Its large, showy flowers provide an important nectar source for bees and other pollinators emerging in spring, before many other trees are in bloom.

The dense branching structure provides nesting and roosting cover for birds. As a long-lived ornamental tree, it contributes lasting structural value to the garden and supports a range of garden wildlife throughout the seasons.
