Planting Instructions
Plant in a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade, in moist, well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil. Avoid shallow chalk soils and frost pockets. Incorporate well-rotted organic matter or ericaceous compost at planting. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, position so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, backfill and firm in well. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool. Water well during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Avoid moving once planted — magnolias dislike root disturbance. Pruning is minimal — remove only dead or damaged wood after flowering.

Magnolia stellata is one of the earliest flowering trees of spring, providing vital nectar and pollen for emerging bumblebees and solitary bees at a time when few other plants are in bloom. The flowers are particularly attractive to queen bumblebees foraging in early spring. The multi-stem structure provides nesting and roosting cover for birds throughout the year, and fallen leaves support overwintering invertebrates in the soil below.
