Olea europaea — Plaited Stem Olive Tree

A statement piece in every sense, this plaited stem Olea europaea is an olive tree elevated to living sculpture. The multiple stems have been carefully trained and braided together over many years to create a distinctive, artfully twisted trunk — a form that brings immediate drama, craftsmanship, and Mediterranean character to any contemporary garden, terrace, or courtyard setting.

Above the plaited stem, the characteristic silver-green foliage of the olive shimmers in the breeze, providing year-round evergreen interest alongside the occasional crop of small olives in warm, sheltered conditions. This is a specimen plant of genuine rarity and presence — the kind of piece that anchors a planting scheme and draws the eye from every angle.

Planting Instructions

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil or a large container with excellent drainage. Olive trees thrive in warm sheltered positions and dislike waterlogged or heavy clay soils. If planting in the ground, dig a generous hole, backfill with gritty free-draining compost, firm, and water thoroughly. Shelter from prolonged hard frosts. Move containers under cover or wrap with fleece during severe cold. Tolerates drought once established. Prune lightly in late spring. Feed container specimens regularly through the growing season.

Size & Specification

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Small creamy-white flowers in early summer attract bees and other pollinators. In warm sheltered UK conditions the tree may produce small olive fruits providing a food source for birds. As an evergreen specimen it provides year-round shelter and roosting habitat for small birds.
