Wildlife & Ecological Notes

A 9-tree orchard collection is an outstanding contribution to garden biodiversity. The spring blossom from apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees provides an abundance of nectar and pollen for bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators at a critical time in the season. The fruit supports birds and mammals including blackbirds, thrushes, fieldfares, and hedgehogs through late summer and autumn. Fallen fruit in particular is invaluable for overwintering wildlife. Established orchard trees also provide nesting cavities, roosting sites, and invertebrate habitat in their bark and structure.
