Planting Instructions

Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil, ideally against a wall, fence, or sturdy support structure. Sheltered positions suit this plant best. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, position so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, backfill and firm in well. Secure to its support if freestanding. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base to retain moisture. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons until established. Once established, Osmanthus is moderately drought-tolerant. Light pruning after flowering maintains the espalier shape — avoid hard pruning into old wood.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Osmanthus aquifolium produces sweetly scented flowers in autumn that are highly attractive to bees, hoverflies, and other late-season pollinators when few other plants are in bloom. The dense, spiny evergreen foliage provides excellent year-round nesting and roosting cover for small garden birds, and the structure of an espalier trained against a wall creates additional sheltered habitat for insects and invertebrates. A practical and wildlife-friendly screening solution.
