Osmanthus burkwoodii – Fragrant Evergreen Shrub

Osmanthus burkwoodii is one of the most rewarding evergreen shrubs you can grow in a UK garden. In spring, it produces masses of small, tubular white flowers with an intensely sweet fragrance that carries beautifully on the breeze — a hidden gem that surprises and delights every year.

Its dense, dark green glossy foliage makes it an excellent choice for formal hedging, screening, or as a handsome standalone specimen. Slow to moderate in growth, it is easy to manage and responds well to clipping, holding its shape neatly with minimal effort.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Osmanthus burkwoodii is highly attractive to pollinators. The intensely fragrant white flowers in April and May are a valuable early-season nectar source for bees and other insects emerging in spring. The dense evergreen canopy provides year-round shelter and nesting cover for garden birds. An excellent choice for a fragrant, wildlife-friendly formal hedge.
