Planting Tip
As a running bamboo, Phyllostachys bissetii spreads by underground rhizomes and can colonise surrounding areas if left unchecked. We strongly recommend installing a root barrier membrane at planting time to contain the spread and protect borders, paths, and neighbouring gardens. A 60–70cm deep barrier is ideal for this vigorous variety.

Planting Instructions
Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Phyllostachys bissetii tolerates most soil types and is one of the hardiest bamboos available, performing reliably even in exposed UK gardens. Dig a hole twice the width of the pot, backfill firmly, and water thoroughly. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Important: Phyllostachys bissetii is a running bamboo that spreads via underground rhizomes. Install a solid root barrier at least 60–70cm deep before planting if growing near boundaries, pathways, or in confined spaces. Plant 1–1.5m apart for a dense privacy screen. Water regularly during the first growing season. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Remove dead or damaged canes in spring to maintain vigour and appearance.
