Prunus cerasifera 'Nigra' - Purple Leaf Plum Tree for sale.

A striking medium-sized ornamental plum that commands attention throughout the seasons. 'Nigra' combines dramatic dark purple foliage with a spectacular spring blossom display, creating a bold architectural statement in any landscape.

Flowers & Foliage

In early spring, before the leaves emerge, the tree becomes adorned with masses of delicate light pink flowers that open from deep pink buds. This beautiful blossom creates a stunning contrast against the dark stems. As the flowers fade, distinctive dark purple leaves unfold, maintaining their rich colour from spring through to autumn and providing a dramatic backdrop in mixed plantings.

Wildlife & Pollinator Value

An excellent source of early nectar for pollinators, the spring flowers support bees and other beneficial insects when food sources are scarce. The tree may also produce small purple fruits that attract birds in late summer.

Growing Conditions

Fully hardy and adaptable, thriving in both sheltered and exposed locations. Prefers full sun for the best foliage colour and flowering performance. Ideal as a standalone specimen tree, in mixed borders, or as part of a purple-themed planting scheme.

Size at Maturity

  • Ultimate height: 8-12 metres
  • Ultimate spread: 8-10 metres

Why Choose 'Nigra'?

Perfect for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance tree with year-round impact. Its purple foliage provides a striking contrast to green-leaved plants, while the early spring blossom signals the start of the growing season with style. A reliable, hardy choice for creating bold colour in larger gardens and landscapes.
