Planting Instructions
Plant at 1–2 plants per metre for a dense, formal hedge. Portuguese laurel thrives in full sun to full shade and tolerates most well-drained soils including chalk and clay. Avoid waterlogged ground.
Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and to the same depth. Backfill, firm in well, and water thoroughly. Apply a balanced fertiliser into the planting hole. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water regularly during the first growing season. Clip once a year after flowering (typically July) to maintain shape.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes
Portuguese Laurel is highly valuable to wildlife. Fragrant white flower racemes in late spring attract bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators. Small dark purple berries in autumn are taken by blackbirds, thrushes, and other berry-feeding birds. Dense evergreen growth provides excellent year-round nesting and roosting cover. A better choice than cherry laurel for gardens near woodland or natural habitats.
