Key Features & Benefits
- Stunning autumn colour: Leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold from September onwards
- Architectural interest: Distinctive velvety stems resemble stag's antlers, providing year-round structure
- Crimson fruit clusters: Female plants produce dense, conical fruiting heads that persist through winter
- Bold foliage: Large pinnate leaves create a tropical, exotic appearance in summer
- Hardy and adaptable: Thrives in poor soils and exposed sites where other trees struggle
- Low maintenance: Drought-tolerant once established, requires minimal care
Planting & Care
Plant Rhus typhina in well-drained soil in full sun for the best autumn colour. Tolerates poor, dry soils and exposed positions. Water during establishment, then minimal watering required. This species suckers freely, creating a multi-stemmed thicket over time—ideal for naturalised plantings or where space allows. Remove suckers if a single-stemmed tree form is preferred. Prune in late winter if necessary to control size or shape.
Ideal For
Perfect as a specimen tree in large borders, wildlife gardens, or naturalistic landscapes. Exceptional for autumn colour displays, architectural focal points, and coastal or exposed sites. The dense fruiting heads provide valuable winter food for birds. Particularly effective when planted against evergreen backdrops to highlight the autumn foliage.
