Why Choose This Hornbeam Arch?

This magnificent pre-trained Carpinus betulus arch delivers instant architectural drama and creates a stunning garden entrance or focal point. Supplied as two matched specimens in 30-litre pots, this ready-formed arch has been expertly trained over several years to create a living gateway that will grace your garden for decades to come.

Hornbeam is the perfect choice for architectural training, offering dense foliage in summer and retaining its attractive russet-brown leaves through winter, providing year-round structure and interest. Unlike many deciduous trees, Hornbeam holds onto its dried leaves until spring, creating a beautiful winter silhouette. This pre-trained arch saves you years of waiting and training, delivering instant impact and maturity.

Growing & Care Guide

Position & Soil

Hornbeam thrives in most well-drained soils and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. Remarkably adaptable, it performs well in heavy clay, chalky, or sandy soils. Plant in borders where the arch will frame a pathway, entrance, or vista. Ensure adequate spacing (typically 1.5-2m apart) to allow the arch to develop properly. The substantial root systems in 30L pots establish quickly.

Watering & Feeding

Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish strong root systems. Once established, Hornbeam is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from watering during prolonged dry spells. Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage.

Pruning & Maintenance

Trim in late summer (August) to maintain the arch shape and encourage dense growth. Hornbeam responds exceptionally well to clipping and can be pruned quite hard if needed. Remove any shoots growing away from the trained framework. The beauty of pre-trained specimens is that the hard work is done – you simply maintain the established form with annual trimming.

Design Ideas

Position the arch to frame a garden entrance, creating a dramatic threshold between garden rooms or marking the transition from formal to informal areas. Use to frame a focal point such as a sculpture, water feature, or specimen tree beyond. The arch creates instant maturity and structure in new gardens.

Hornbeam arches work beautifully in both traditional and contemporary settings. Combine with clipped box, yew, or beech hedging for formal schemes, or contrast with naturalistic perennial planting for a softer look. The winter structure is particularly valuable, providing architectural interest when many plants have died back.

Seasonal Interest

Spring: Fresh bright green leaves emerge, creating a vibrant canopy
Summer: Dense green foliage provides lush, cooling shade
Autumn: Leaves turn golden-yellow before becoming russet-brown
Winter: Retains dried russet leaves, creating beautiful winter structure and interest
