Planting Instructions

Planting Instructions

This is a large 14ft specimen tree in a 55L pot. Due to its size, professional planting or at least two people is strongly recommended. Plant in autumn or spring for best establishment.

  • Dig a planting pit at least twice the width of the root ball and the same depth
  • Incorporate well-rotted organic matter into the backfill
  • Hornbeam tolerates most soil types including heavy clay, chalk, and exposed sites
  • Water thoroughly after planting; apply a 5–10cm mulch ring around the base, keeping mulch clear of the stem
  • Stake securely — at this size, a robust staking system is essential for the first 2–3 seasons
  • Water regularly throughout the first growing season, especially in dry spells
  • Trim in late summer to maintain the pyramidal form if required

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Common Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a native British woodland tree that supports a wide range of wildlife, even in its formal pyramidal form.

  • Catkins provide early pollen for bees and other pollinators in spring
  • Seeds (hop-like nutlets) eaten by finches, tits, and small mammals
  • Dense branching provides nesting habitat and cover for birds
  • Supports numerous moth species and invertebrates associated with native woodland
  • Retained russet-brown winter foliage provides shelter for overwintering insects and birds
  • UK native — fully adapted to local soils, climate, and wildlife communities
