- Dig a planting pit at least twice the width of the root ball and the same depth
- Incorporate well-rotted organic matter into the backfill
- Hornbeam tolerates most soil types including heavy clay, chalk, and exposed sites
- Water thoroughly after planting; apply a 5–10cm mulch ring around the base, keeping mulch clear of the stem
- Stake securely — at this size, a robust staking system is essential for the first 2–3 seasons
- Water regularly throughout the first growing season, especially in dry spells
- Trim in late summer to maintain the pyramidal form if required
