Growing Conditions

Supplied in a 2–3 litre pot at 30–50cm tall. Mature height: 2–3m. Spread: 1.5–2m. Thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Shelter from cold winds for best results. Excellent for south or west-facing positions.

Planting & Care

Plant spring through autumn, avoiding frozen or waterlogged ground. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, improve soil with compost, and water thoroughly after planting. Water regularly during the first growing season. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. Light pruning after flowering to maintain shape — can be trimmed as a formal hedge or left to grow naturally.

Planting Instructions

Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Shelter from cold winds, particularly in colder regions. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, improve the soil with well-rotted compost or organic matter, and position so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill, firm in well, and water thoroughly. Mulch around the base to retain moisture. Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, Osmanthus is moderately drought-tolerant. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. Light pruning after flowering to maintain shape — can be trained as a formal hedge or left to grow naturally.

Wildlife & Ecological Notes

Osmanthus fragrans produces sweetly scented flowers in late summer and autumn that are highly attractive to bees, hoverflies, and other late-season pollinators at a time when many other plants have finished flowering. The dense evergreen foliage provides year-round shelter and nesting cover for small garden birds and overwintering insects. A valuable addition to any wildlife-friendly garden.
