Photinia compacta 'Carré Rouge' – Compact Red-Tip Photinia

Photinia compacta 'Carré Rouge' is a refined, more restrained form of the classic red-tip photinia — offering all the drama of vivid scarlet new growth in a tighter, more manageable habit. An outstanding evergreen shrub for year-round structure, it produces brilliant red young foliage in spring and again in late summer, maturing to a deep, glossy green. Ideal for formal hedging, screening, or as a bold standalone specimen in a border or large container.

Why Choose 'Carré Rouge'

  • Striking scarlet-red new growth in spring and late summer
  • Compact, dense habit — easier to manage than standard Photinia varieties
  • Glossy, deep green mature foliage provides excellent year-round screening
  • Responds well to clipping — ideal for formal hedges and topiary shapes
  • Evergreen — maintains privacy and structure through winter
  • Clusters of small white flowers in late spring add seasonal interest

Growing Guide

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade; best colour in full sun
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained; tolerates most soil types including clay
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy (RHS H5)
  • Ultimate height: 1.5–2m; easily kept smaller with regular trimming
  • Pruning: Clip in late spring after flowering, and again in late summer to encourage fresh red growth

Planting & Care Tips

  • Plant in full sun for the most intense red colouring on new growth
  • Space at 60–80cm apart for a dense, formal hedge
  • Mulch around the base after planting to retain moisture and suppress weeds
