Salix integra ‘Hakuro Nishiki’ – Dappled Willow (Shrub Form)

Few shrubs offer the same level of year-round colour and interest as Salix integra ‘Hakuro Nishiki’. In spring, its young stems burst into life with a spectacular display of new growth in shades of white, pink, and pale green — a combination so vivid it can appear almost painted. As the season progresses the foliage matures to a softer variegated green and white, before the bare stems take on a warm orange-red tone through winter. Supplied in shrub form, it has a naturally bushy, multi-stemmed habit that is ideal for containers, small borders, and courtyard gardens.

Why Choose ‘Hakuro Nishiki’ Shrub Form

  • Spectacular spring foliage in white, pink, and pale green — one of the most colourful shrubs available
  • Variegated green and white summer foliage provides continued interest through the season
  • Warm orange-red winter stems add colour and structure when the garden is bare
  • Bushy, multi-stemmed shrub form — ideal for containers, small beds, and courtyard gardens
  • Fast-growing and easy to maintain — responds well to hard pruning for the best spring colour
  • Available in 2 litre and 5 litre pot sizes

Growing Guide

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade; best spring colour in full sun
  • Soil: Moist to wet; tolerates most soil types including heavy clay and waterlogged ground
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy (RHS H6)
  • Ultimate height: 1.5–2m as a shrub; easily kept smaller with annual pruning
  • Pruning: Cut back hard in early spring to encourage the most vivid new growth and maintain a compact habit

Planting & Care Tips

  • Plant in full sun for the most intense spring foliage colour
  • Prune hard each spring to a low framework for the best display of new growth
  • Excellent in large containers — ensure consistent moisture and feed regularly
  • Mulch around the base to retain moisture, especially in drier soils
